Ok ravensong, I'm even more newb in photoshop, but some things I would do if painting it in real paint :

Darker shade, make the deepest shadow black (right under the helmet).
And dont give up until u do the stuff around it!!! It will look a lot different when u see the total picture!

I think u do a great job so far ^^

Poor Kormir. Blind as a bat and attacked by an octopus.

Disturbing. I like it.

Your chains could use more detail though. Chains twist and turn, yours are kinda one-dimensional.

nah, grey's using the alternating head-on ring/edge of ring style of drawing chain. This is fine for tight, straight chain, but the chain thats curled on the floor doesnt look very good.

After drawing lots of Ghost Rider and Pitt, i kinda got forced out of drawings chains that way (not to mention my work deals with a lot of chains and linked jewelry),you kinda have to think about each link as a seperate entity and how its position and twist is relevant to the overall tautness/limpness of the chain.

Here's one of my pictures here...it's Dwayna. Couldn't do much with the background considering i have only one brush and im using the kind of watercolors that come in the little tube, which ive never used before, not to mention there are only four colors plus black and white so i have to mix everything by hand. tell me what you think of this.

You do some really nice drawings, if you're just learning photoshop i'd highly recommend checking out this guy's tutorials:

SteelDolphin

For your balthazar, i'd try dropping a "mood" fill of one color under your line art, and then start building up the rest of him on top of that. And don't be afraid to use weird ass colors, like starting by painting the face a dark purple or green and then building up the standard flesh tones over that. You can really get - eh, sorry, i just get excited about this stuff and tend to ramble on
